🎥 Overview

Across three semesters of my Master’s in Interaction Design at Monash University, I immersed myself in the art and craft of cinematography through a series of student-led film projects. These works allowed me to explore multiple roles, from ideation and storyboarding to camera operation, lighting design, post-production, and even acting(!), each contributing to a deeper understanding of motion storytelling.

🧠 My Role & Technical Scope

I wore many hats throughout these projects, blending imagination with technique to create emotionally resonant visual narratives. My responsibilities included:

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Camera operation (DSLR and mirrorless), gimbal stabilization, manual focus and exposure settings, lighting setups (natural and artificial), green screen integration, and on-set coordination

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Voice syncing and narration recording, editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Motion graphics and intros using After Effects, Sound design and ambient layering, colour grading and visual refinement

🎭 Creative Intent

I’m drawn to visuals that feel real but carry a sense of mystery and emotion. These projects helped me explore how to connect with different audiences and express ideas through mood, movement, and framing. They also gave me space to discover my own strengths, from directing and editing to understanding how visuals can evoke feeling and meaning.

⚙️ One Challenge

Managing long scenarios pushed me to maintain consistency across scenes. In one project, I acted while directing, a challenge that taught me how to balance performance with technical setup and team coordination. These experiences helped me become more flexible, collaborative, and confident in leading creative work.

🌟 One Highlight

One standout moment was collaborating with a talented team on a green screen project, a new experience for me that expanded my technical skills and creative thinking. With support from my tutor, Dr. Robin Hely, and my peers, we produced a piece I’m proud of both visually and emotionally.

These projects laid the groundwork for my current role as a freelance videographer, where I now create content for events and businesses. The skills I gained — from planning and shooting to editing and storytelling — continue to shape how I approach each new project. More importantly, they helped me understand my audience, refine my creative voice, and build confidence in working across different formats and styles.
